While networking at a trade association convention, self-publisher Karen Adler met the publisher of On the Grill magazine. As a result, she became their regular book reviewer. Her column mentioned that she is the president of Pig Out Publications, the only company in the world specializing in publishing and distributing barbecue and grill cookbooks. Her column also listed her 800 number.

As a result of the column, she received calls from stores that sell outdoor grills, publishers of gift catalogs, and other retailers looking to do business with her. Now some of her books are published by Harvard Common Press and Celestial Arts.
